What Does Your Speed Post Status Mean?

Stop guessing what India Post is telling you. Here is what every speed post tracking status actually means.

Item Booked

Your parcel has been accepted at the origin post office and entered into the India Post system. The journey officially begins here. You will receive this status within minutes of handing over your item at the counter.

Item Bagged

Your parcel has been sorted and sealed inside a large dispatch bag along with other mail heading in the same direction. It is ready to be loaded onto a vehicle or train. This step happens at the origin Sorting Hub (NSH/TMO).

Item Dispatched

Your parcel is now physically in transit; on a road vehicle, train, or flight moving from one facility to the next. The Item Dispatched status appears multiple times during a journey as it passes through different sorting hubs across India.

Item Received

Your parcel has arrived safely at a new sorting office or at your local delivery post office. It will now be processed and either forwarded to the next hub or prepared for final delivery to your address.

Item Invoiced

Your parcel has been added to the delivery postman's list for today. This is an important status — it means the final delivery post office has assigned it to a delivery round. Expect delivery soon.

Out for Delivery

The postman has your parcel and is currently on their delivery route. You should receive it today. Keep your phone accessible and ensure someone is available at the delivery address to receive it.

Item Delivered

Your parcel has been successfully handed over to the recipient at the delivery address. If you have not received it, first check with family members or neighbours. If still missing, contact your local post office within 7 days.

Delivery Failed

The postman attempted delivery but could not complete it. The address may have been unclear or no one was available to receive it. A second delivery attempt will typically be made on the next working day.

Item Returned

Your parcel is being sent back to the sender, usually after two or more failed delivery attempts, or if the address was undeliverable. Contact your local post office or the sender immediately to arrange re-delivery.

How to Find Your Speed Post Tracking Number?

Lost your receipt & unable to track speed post? Don't worry — There are 4 simple ways to recover your Speed Post tracking ID.

1

Check Your Receipt

If you posted the item yourself at a post office, the 13-character tracking number is printed on your booking receipt (money receipt). Look for it under 'Consignment No.' or 'Article No.'.

2

Check Your SMS / Email

India Post sends an automated SMS to the sender's registered mobile with the tracking number at the time of booking. Search your SMS inbox for 'IndiaPost' or 'INDPOS'.

3

Check the Sender

If you are the recipient of a parcel (e.g., a passport, bank document, or online order), contact the sender — the government office, bank, or seller — and ask them for the tracking number.

4

Visit the Post Office

If all else fails, visit the post office where the item was booked with your identity proof. The staff can retrieve the consignment number from their records.
